I have been making a new wood type recently and when I tried to do the fences they only connected to the fences that were same materials as them and they only connected to overworld wood and not nether wood fences.Is it a bug or am I missing something?

I don't know if this still works I have never made a fence personally.https://mcreator.net/forum/58483/tutorial-make-custom-fences-connect-vanilla-fences. You may have to use blockstates.
It was made in 1.14. Back than crimson and warperd fences didn't exist so there was no problem of material typed fences. But now wood and nether wood are different types so the fence needs to be coded to be connected to different types of fences. I was asking about the code.
you can just add down tag wooden fences and add both your fences there
