I need help making a chest and changing block states

I'm making a chest but i want to change its block state. But I'm having trouble with the orientation when it switches block states. Also is there a way I can revert the state back once the gui closes?

I want to make a chest but i'm having this problem as of now i can switch the block state but the direction doesn't stay. how can i fix this?

second is there a way i can change the block state back when the gui closes (ex. clicking esc) And still maintain the inventory when it swaps back? As of now i don't know if its possible could i get some insight.
