how to check what side of a block a player is looking at

i need to know for a 3x3 mining 'hammer' i am making (same as the one in tinkers construct) i have the block "code" for the rest it just only mines the 3x3 down or up and i want it to be able to mine on the x and z axises also.

if anyone has anyway of doing this using blocks or custom code snippets it would be much appreciated
