The farmland isnt registering my plants

I've followed the single crops tutorial in the "how to make a plant" section on the wiki and copied everything, and yet my plants are still 1 pixel to high and the farmland i guess doesn't see them, which in turn makes it dirt, and therefore destroying the plant. I would really appreciate any help you can offer.
