Hodge-Podge Getting Started Guide
Sun, 08/16/2020 - 09:37 (edited)

Welcome to the official guide for Hodge-Podge! Don't you know what to do next, how to access to the dimensions of how to summon a boss?

Well, this is the right place then!

This is a guide about the basic progression, but since most of the mod is designed to be discovered while playing it, it won't tell you everything. It will just guide you in the right direction. Also, it will tell you no recipes, you'll need a mod like JEI (Just Enough Items) for that.

Some changes to the Overworld

This mod, besides adding many dimensions, also does a few changes to the Overworld. For example, these mobs will now spawn there:

  • Werewolf: this mob is a Villager during the day and a powerful monster during the night. If you are that bad to kill the innocent villager counterpart, you will get no XP.
  • Kobold: a neutral mob found in Caves. It has a candle on its head and lights up the area. You could kill it to get some leather and a Candle, but who would attack such a cute walking light source?
  • A few bonus dungeon mobs

There now is a new ore, Silver Ore. You'll need it for some important recipes. It has ore dictionary compatibility, so if you have Silver from other mods (including RaolCraft), that will work too.

Silver can also be used to craft the Silver Apple, a powerful food that resets your health and your status effects. It doesn't give any food points and has a cooldown though.

There also is a new mob drop: Tallow. You can get it by hunting Pigs or smelting their already cooked meat. Tallow can be used for Candles, and like everything else in the mod (this is the last time I repeat it XD) it has ore dictionary compatibility.

Not related to the Overworld but to the Nether, Wither Skeletons now drop Wither Bones. You can use them to create a bone meal that rather than fertilising the soil kills nearby plants (I don't know how could it be useful anyway). They also have many uses you'll discover later.

Finally, there are many new structures, like the Mystical Fountain (where there is a statue that can heal you) and the Snow Temple (found in snowy biomes), but the most important probably is the Golden Temple.

The Golden Temple is important because you can find the item needed to get to the first dimension, the Scepter of the DarkWorld. There are some powerful mobs in this temple (like Temple Skeletons, basically fast Zombies, and regular Skeletons with a bow). If you're like me and don't want to fight them, you could use some water to move the mobs away from the treasure or you could just ignore them and dig a hole from outside in the exact point where the treasure chest is (nobody stops you from doing that XD).

The DarkWorld

To get to this dimension, create a portal of DarkBricks (see their recipe with JEI) and use the Scepter of the DarkWorld (found in the Golden Temple, see the previous paragraph) to ignite it.

The DarkWorld, as the name says, is a very dark place. It looks similar to the Nether, but made of Voltrock.

This dimension is the first dimension in Hodge-Podge you can visit, and also was the first one to be explored by the Dawn Voyager, the pioneer of interdimensional travel.

In the DarkWorld you can find these mods:

  • Hostile Dark Elf: after their last visitor caused a great conflict, this tribe of elves who settled in the DarkWorld decided to attack any intruders who dare attempt interdimensional travel again! Dark Elves drop an Occult Pearl when killed.
  • Zombie Cowman: a common neutral mob that behaves similarly to Zombie Pigm- I mean Zombified Piglins, but is a cow. They can easily be powerful allies if an enemy accidentally hits one of them rather than the player. Fun fact: their texture is based on the skin of the author of the original Hodge-Podge mod, Eonaut.
  • Oun: a powerful monster that deals a lot of damage. It drops its eye, which provides night vision for a bit if you are brave enough to eat it... Ugh.
  • Fulmenblaze: a thunder-elemental version of the Blaze. Can shoot from the distance and sometimes levitate for a bit. Drops its rod when killed.
  • Electroslime: a thunder-elemental slime that bounces on the water and attacks players. Drops Thunder Paste.
  • Kobold of the DarkWorld: Kobold love caves, but the Nether is too warm for them, so they decided to settle in the DarkWorld instead. Besides the name and the aspect, they are perfectly identical to the cousins who live in the Overworld.

In this dimension you can also find many new blocks, including a new type of magma block and some glowing stalagmites. But I'll let you discover this by yourself. The only thing I will tell you is there is a new kind of ore, the Smoky Quartz. You'll need to mine quite a lot of it if you want to go to the Wonderland.

Anyway, you can use some of the materials found in the DarkWorld to craft a Dark Brewing Stand. This new crafting station uses Lava (contained in an Obsidian Bottle), Fulmenblaze Powder and a material to create new kind of potions. Right now it can only be used to brew the Potion of Lava Traversing, which lets you walk on lava, but more are coming.

In this dimension many structures can also be found, but the most important one is the Collector's Tower. A friendly NPC who can trade with you lives there, the Collector. This Dark Elf likes the collect ancient rarities and you can give him some to get many rewards!

Right-click him to speak with him. He will give you hints on where to find one of the items he wants. If you right-click him while holding one of these, he will trade the rarity with a precious reward. Rewards include Diamonds, Silver Apples and much more! You won't be able to trade the same rarity again. As of the latest version, there are 7 rarities.

While trading a rarity, he might tell you about a secret treasure hidden somewhere... But to find that treasure you'll need to also play RaolCraft Omega!

There also is another NPC, the Trader Dark Elf (yes, the name is weird...)! He can be found in his hut and can turn one Enderpearl into three Occult Pearls at the cost of one level of experience.

But what are these Occult Pearls used for? Well, they have many recipes, including the Magical Mirror (name to change). This block can be used to turn many items into different ones. Just check its in-game description to know its recipes.

You can use the Magical Mirror to turn Obsidian into Glowing Obsidian. You can use the latter to make an item (the Cinder Talisman) used to summon the first boss of the mod, the Smoldering Knight.

The Smoldering Knight once was one of the three Ancients who accompanied the Dawn Voyager in his travels. He was the most cultured of the three and only lived for knowledge. After exploring all the dimensions he found the Smoldering Scroll, an artifact capable of giving unlimited knowledge to its reader, at the price of being overflooded by it and losing the reason. The Smoldering Knight, unaware of this, opened the scroll and... well, just look at what he's become.

This boss is quite strong and has various abilities but you can easily defeat it once you get to know its weaknesses. I will just tell you its melee attacks deal a lot of damage and it can summon some allies.

You don't need a powerful gear to defeat it anyway (I managed to legitimately defeat it with a simple Lead Armor from RaolCraft back when the boss attack damage wasn't nerfed yet - and I'm quite bad at combat XD)

Anyway, once you defeat the Smoldering Knight, he will drop quite a lot of loot: the Ember Talisman, the Bone of Destruction, the Smoldering Scroll, some Stardust and his armor and sword too if you are lucky.

The Ember Talisman is a simple item that removes fire from you when right-clicked. It can be seen as a cheaper alternative to the Totem/Amulet of Fire Resistance from RaolCraft Omega.

The Bone of Destruction can be used to go to another dimension, the Wastes.

The Smoldering Scroll is the powerful artifact that made the Smoldering Knight go crazy. You can't read it (you would become the next Smoldering Knight... XD) but you can give it to the Collector for a reward if you want.

The Stardust is a rare material dropped by all Hodge-Podge III bosses.

Here are some of the things you can make using Stardust:

  • The Wither Blade, a weapon that inflicts Wither effect to the target
  • The Arcane Bricks, some special blocks which behave similarly to creative mode blocks: they can be placed infinite times and don't drop themselves when destroyed. You can't destroy them that quick without a pickaxe though.
  • The Aurora Helmet, which lets you produce light similarly to a Kobold (should work with armorstands too but I haven't tested yet!).

You can now go exploring other dimensions! You can use some materials collected in the DarkWorld (including a lot of Smoky Quartz!) to get to the Wonderland, or you can use the Bone of Destruction to access the Wastes.

The Wastes

Not much is known about this dimension, except it once was very similar to the Overworld but at some point of its existence it turned into what it looks like today, a huge wasteland populated by strange monsters and zombies. It was also colonised by some Dark Elves who escaped from the DarkWorld: they planted Murkwood trees and Blood Lilies, recreating what used to be one of the most most common biomes in the DarkWorld, the Murkwoods. No traces of existing Dark Elves are known though (maybe in a future update XD).

This dimension was the second one to be visited by the Dawn Voyager.

It mostly consists of 3 biomes:

  • The Wastes, a land of dead grass
  • The Soul Desert, a desert made of soul sand
  • The Murkwoods, a forest whose trees were planted by Dark Elves centuries ago

The mobs who inhabit this place include:

  • Zombies of the Wastes, mostly found on dead grass
  • Green Hunters, bow-wielding monsters found in the Murkwoods
  • Elgeths, cousins of the Ouns who have little health but are very fast and deal a lot of damage
  • Grahls, other cousins of the Ouns, the slow and tanky ones

You can find a few new structures in this dimension, including a Green Hunters' hut where a new rarity can be found.

Despite being a post-apocalyptic dimension, there also are some plants here, including:

  • Tartarus Plants, red cacti found in the Soul Desert
  • Blood Lilies, flowers found in the Murkwoods
  • Murkwood trees found in the Murkwoods

The wood of these trees can be used to craft planks, bookshelves etc. (just like vanilla wood), but the Murkwoods actually hide a secret.

Some trees might be different than others. You might notice a glow in the darkness, some flaming sparkles... and a scary face carved in the wood.

Right-click that face and an ancient spirit will be freed from the tree: the Tainted Knight.

The Tainted Knight once was one of the three Ancients who accompanied the Dawn Voyager in his journey. After the group was dissolved due to some conflicts of interest, the Tainted Knight went alone to the Taint (a dimension you will be able to visit later) where was severely wounded and, unaware of the dimension's terrible toxin, got corrupted by it. He tried to escape from the dimension, but as he was losing control of his mind he only managed to get to the Wastes. The toxin eventually prevailed, turning it into a violent abomination. Since he was too strong to be killed, the Dark Elves decided to trap his spirit in a Murkwood tree.

After summoning him, the Tainted Knight will fly around and attack from the distance. While he's alive, Grim Haunters will spawn in place of Green Hunters: these ghostly mobs are the victims of the Tainted Knight and are immune from all sources of damage, except a direct melee hit, which will instantly defeat them.

When killed, the Tainted Knight drops the Tainted Scepter, the Voodoo Pendent and some Stardust.

The Voodoo Pendent was the item used by Dark Elves to trap the Knight in the tree. You can give it to the Collector for a reward.

The Tainted Scepter is the artifact used to access the Taint dimension.

You can't build the portal for getting to the Taint. You have to find it in structure which is located directly underneath the tree where the boss was trapped. Just mine until you find it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The dungeon is filled with Ghouls, hostile undeads who are very slow until they spot their prey.

The Wonderland

Before describing the Taint, let's write about the Wonderland, the third dimension to be explored by the Dawn Voyager.

You can easily get to this dimension by building a portal of Smoky Quartz (a material found in the DarkWorld) and igniting it with a Wonder Mirror (whose materials are relatively easy to obtain).

This place can be considered a mirrored version of the Overworld and consists of three main biomes:

  • The Geyser Fields, a dry land with costant eruptions
  • The Tulgey Forest, a forest
  • The Tumtum Forest, another forest (yay!)

The surface is either made of Wondergrass or Cracked Dirt, while the underground consists of Wonderrock.

Mobs which spawn here include:

  • Knightcard, a monster created by the arcane magic of a crazed alchemist long ago
  • Walking Geyser, it's a Geyser, but it's little and it walks

There are a few structures with unique rarities in this dimension (found both in the surface and in the underground), but besides that, there isn't much to do right now, so let's just skip to the next dimension.

The Taint

The Taint was the fourth dimension to be discovered by the Dawn Voyager. To access this dimension you have to find a portal of Ravenbricks in the Ghoul Dungeon and ignite it using a Tainted Scepter (see the Wastes paragraph).

The Taint once was a beautiful realm with black volcanic sand beaches and amazing crystal structure, but beneath the surface was hiding a noxious toxin corrupting everything. A second expedition of Ancients realised the presence and impact of the toxin and decided to build a golem which could absorb the toxin to process it into something less dangerous. The project had good intentions, but things went horribly bad: rather than processing the toxin, the golem began to synthetize more of it, tainting everything it came in contact with.

The dimension now is entirely corrupted by the toxin. Its landscape can be divided into three main biomes:

  • The Tainted Wasteland, a land mostly made of Taintstone
  • The Skeletal Woods, where Bonewood trees can be found
  • The Dusk Desert, a black desert of Dusk Sand

Mobs which can be found here include:

  • Tainted Skeleton, probably used to be one of the explorers of this dimension
  • Tainted Jabberwock, a Jabberwock that was corrupted and weakened by the toxin

Bonewood Trees found in the Skeletal Woods hold a Tainted Crystal Block. You can break that block to get 4 Tainted Crystal Chunks. Surround a Diamond (or a Cursed Diamond) with 8 chunks to create some Tyrianite.

You can use Tyrianite to create an armor which it's slightly better than Diamond. However, due to the toxin it absorbed, it might poison you a little.

This dimension was introduced in the last update, so there isn't much to do right now. If you made it to this point... Well, congratulations, you have completed the mod (for now)! :D

Oh and can I post feature suggestions here?

•Healing a werewolf using a diamond and some kind of cure. It will spawn a villager and there would be lots of XP drops and a rarity? And perhaps a "goal" achievement?

•And when you finished trading all the items, you unlock an exclusive trade using a mysterious item in Alloy... Just use an nbt tag called fiery_claws. And it will give you some diamonds and a lot of xp.

I actually already plan to make werewolves curable using a Silver Apple (as soon as MCreator adds source and target dependencies), but I didn't think of a rarity got by healing them, thanks for the idea :) I will probably make some kind of amulet that was the cause of their curse

Since I don't think I will stop adding rarities soon, is it fine if the Collector triggers the variable when you trade the 7th rarity? And can you tell me more about those fiery claws (because the Collector should tell you how to find them or what are them before trigger the variable)?

1. You can just use "On right-clicked on mob", check if it is a silver apple, and give heal him.

2. "I heard that some adventurers found a species of hedgehog in the ruins of a legendary city close to a volcano. They have an extremely small chance that they mutate and become hostile to humans. Their claws are known to have a mystical power to control fire, I will reward you if you find one for me." Or something shorter XD

Can you also do mutated firey hedgehog model and texture? (Bigger and more hostile looking)

And also the textures for the fiery claws (preferably animated), and hedgehog spikes textures, please?

1. I can't do "when right-clicken on mob" as you said, because I need two dependencies: the werewolf that is being healed and the player who is getting the advancement, the item and consumes a Silver Apple

2. Ok :) The Collector will be interested in those claws because, while not being ancient artifacts of ancient populations, are very mysterious because of the hedgehog mutation and the fact they can be used to master the fire element

The issue isn't the achievement, it's that you need the player to check for the silver apple and to consume it and the werewolf to heal it

To make the slime jump, I added the AI task "leap at target"

But the Electroslime doesn't just jump on ground, it does on ground too, by using a procedure that checks for water and adds a levitation effect

Sat, 11/02/2019 - 21:27

Coming in the next patch:

  • A fix for the Collector (if it works)
  • The removal of the WIP recipe of the candle helmet I accidentally forgot to disable
  • A new name for Pearls of the Dark Elves (and related stuff): Occult Pearls
  • A new name for generic (non Collector) Dark Elves: Dark Elf Warriors (sounds weird, will probably be changed)
  • A new advancement
  • The Trader Dark Elf (name to change), another friendly NPC that turns Enderpearls into Occult Pearls multiplyng them by 3, in exchange for some XP:dark elf trader

He will spawn in a structure, similarly to the Collector. I will retexture him since he kinda looks weird with that green outfit...

I added a new Dark Elf NPC because in the next major updates a new kind of village is coming... The village of the Elves of the Wonderland!

Dark Elf Warriors is a really weird name, can you change it to 'hostile elfs' or something?

nice update though!
