trying to make placeable portal blocks like in bedrock for java

im new to minecraft modding and i wanted to make a mod that allows me to obtain the portal block(nether portal, end gate ect) like in bedrock but in java but im trying to find tutorials of how to do it but the only thing is just how to make a block, i know theres a datapack that allows you but i rather have an actual portal block that looks cleaner and without use of commands, can anyone help me out? thank you
