Mimic copper Wax-On particles (square cube)

I'm trying to emulate the shape in which wax on particles appear when you wax a copper block but I just can't get it to work. I've tried every possible combination of x y z and dx dy dz coordinates and they all spawn particles inside or around the block, with very few being actually on the block (the correct position).  Please help
