How do the MCreator versions work?

Just a quick question, how do the MCreator versions work? It is now on "2020.4", is that related to the month it came out? Or is it just year+versionNumber? I'm fine either way, just asking to know if I can have any idea of how long an update can take.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, since asking about MCreator future versions may sound like I'm rushing while I'm actually not, just asking for curiosity!
