bizarre and elitist attitudes toward mcreator in the modding community
Fri, 11/08/2019 - 07:04

Kind of a weird topic but I've noticed that a lot of modders and members of the modding community harbor some kind of bizarre hatred toward mcreator mods. I've asked people to describe exactly why but I haven't gotten more than one answer that isn't based on ignorance or elitism. I've had numerous exchanges with people on discord about it and the amount of vitriol generated by something so petty seems to be extreme; people get emotional, almost angry, that you won't agree with them that it's bad. It's just a game!

The one logical response that I've gotten (which was like pulling teeth to get) was that mcreators license allows its owner to "own" whatever modders make with it, and that this is both a War Crime and a contradiction of the prevailing attitudes in the modding community. Personally, I honestly don't care who "owns" my assets because they are worth nothing and generate zero income, but I also know that people can be extremely irrational about who "owns" things in our society, regardless of the actual value or effect of owning it.

The other common response, which I actually find hilarious, is that people should just "learn to code". There are so many arguments about why that statement is laughably absurd that I won't bother to list them all, but suffice to say the best response is probably along the lines of "OK coder".

Anyway, I'm curious about other peoples experience with this and just want to see if anyone else has encountered the same unusual prejudice.

1. Mod quality

As is with a lot of things. MCreator makes modding REALLY accessible for a lot of people. This is why some say that "MCreator mods are trash". But that will always happen anywhere where you make something accessible to the masses. Of course self coded mods are going to be better on average, as coding introduces a barrier that will filter out a lot of young people and people who aren't really that dedicated to their modding idea. People who are just wondering about can create a simple mod and publish it. Accessibility however may make it so that more bad mods are created, it doesn't mean that you cannot make really good mods with it.

2. Owner rights

I'm pretty sure owner rights are the way they are to avoid getting into legal problems mostly. They are simply for convenience. You cannot make money with your mods, and owner rights aren't taken from you with any evil intent or a nasty scheme. The team behind MCreator is pretty small and do their work voluntarily.

That's how I see it. (:

Honestly, I can only speak for myself when i say you just have to prove yourself in the modding community. It's taken many years to get my mod to a state were the modding community can now respect me and my work. Even to this day I still get questions like "why isn't this BoP?" and honestly you just gotta shrug it off. As for ownership, I'm proud to have the Mcreator name put next to mine if that is what the devs request for me using their program. They worke just as hard as I do to make this program that lets me make the mod; I don't have a lot of free time so this modding tools makes everything alot quicker.

Don't get me wrong, I've got no grievance with people who who whine about mcreator mods. Like I said, it's just a game, and everyone's entitled to their opinion. I just don't really understand their perspective, and I like to be able to at least empathize with people.

I brought this up to vent, which is a healthy and good thing, but also to try and gain some insight into other perspectives. I'm also curious about other mcreator users experiences.

Fri, 11/22/2019 - 09:15

Yeah, we don't care about what they think. people who use MCreator often have no real coding skill, so we can't create mods as awesome as GalactiCraft, Advent of Ascension or AbyssalCraft. But we work hard on our stuff, and that's the only important thing ^^

Yet my Mineral Galore mod took six months to get where it is, I know it doesn't worth other good hand-coded mods but I worked hard on it. There are almost a thousand mod elements, 40 ores, 15 mobs, a whole dimension, and I don't care about what the others think. When trying to post the mod on CurseForge, I didn't get a lot of downloads (posted in july, got only 320 downloads) but at least people see we're determined to do great things, even with softwares like MCreator.

I think we can report haters to the curseforge moderators.

I myself have had experience with those who are not in favor of MCreator, and there is only so much that I can understand about their perspective. Sure there's the seemingly effortless mods that are made by less experienced users, but that's still an expression of their ideas. However, MCreator can be utilized to create mods that are still really good. I've been working on Chaotica [not to advertise or anything but you should definitely check it out on here or curseforge] for over a year now, and it has come very far from where it started. It is an expression of my ideas and mind. It kinda started like a lot of other mods here, but I dedicated myself to it enough that it started to go in a new direction. Those who are not in favor of MCreator have only seen one side of what MCreator can do.

Mon, 11/25/2019 - 05:36

there's an idea ive found, especially in programming circles of any kind, of "real" modders/programmers/creators, and "fake" ones. basically, if you can't build it from scratch, this somehow makes you inferior. but that's kind of the same as saying that someone who uses a frozen vegetable mix is worse than someone who cuts and freezes the vegetables themselves.

the result for the end user is the same, but those people who create from the ground up often become annoyed or frustrated by those who use what they view as "crutches." web devs using wordpress, vn creators using ren'py, digital artists, or people using modding tools.

what we need is an attitude shift, but we have a society where using a "crutch" (or asking for help, or doing things more slowly, or not doing it perfectly....) is seen as bad instead of just different.

that's what i think, anyway. 🤷‍♂️
