Topic category: Help with Minecraft modding (Java Edition)
Hi, I like many others developers want to deliver the highest quality content as we possibly can for the community, but there will be times where you feel like you can't achieve such feats. I believe reasons why are when your not strong in many areas such as texturing or coding. I am one of those people, I really can code pretty well, I can create really great models, I know all the steps to developing and the amount of dedication it requires to make something fun and enjoyable for all, but when it comes to making good textures I'm not really that talented. So I'm asking if anyone would have good texturing tips that I can use as a backbone for becoming a better texturer in the future.
Edit* Just thought I'd let people know that I'm a single developer
I'm not that good at textures either, but here are some tips.
1. DO NOT USE THE MCREATOR TEXTURE GENERATOR
2. Pull the vanilla textures from the minecraft .jar and use it as a base
3. Use different shades of the same color to draw stuff
4. Learn to use the filters and layers features of your editing app, will help you a lot.
5. Try to base your texture on a real life image.
6.Be creative. Adding a different touch to your ores, tools, etc. to make them feel different than plain vanilla items and blocks.
7. Don't stress. If your textures are ugly you can always open forum topics for someone to help you.
start making low quality textures making textures packs things like that
after some time you will increase the pixels and you will become better at that
and one day your textures will be awesome
(sorry for my english non-native language)
The advices you were given are very good, here is just another one (a little one):
When making a shade in a texture, choose a color palette then use those colors. Don't make things too blurry, they don't look good for pixeled textures (I've only realised this quite recently XD)
I know it's been like 4 years now and many will probably think I'm just necroposting but idc, I wanna say this bc I think it could help depending on where you are now compared to 4 years ago. My best advice is to just keep making textures every time you feel inspired to do so. You can follow everyone else's tips all you want, and while it will help you especially when getting started, I've found that real, natural skill with texture creation just comes with experience. I've been working with MCreator since I was about 8; I'm 18 now and I consider myself a thousand times better than I was back then, and most of that came purely from me experimenting and finding what works for me over the years. However, I know that in another decade, I can and will be yet another thousand times better because of having twice the experience by that point. At the end of the day, the best tip anyone can give you for getting good at any activity, and this will sound really cliche and stupid but it's 110% true, is practice makes perfect. If you somehow happen to see this, then good luck and I hope you make amazing mods for this beautiful game! :D
